Week 5 NFL Surprise: Broncos Upset Eagles and Bills Succumb to Patriots

NFL Action

The final pair of unbeaten teams in the NFL saw their perfect records shattered during the fifth week as both the Philadelphia Eagles along with Buffalo Bills endured shocking losses on their own turf.

The Denver Broncos evolved from dark horses to headline-makers thanks to an spectacular comeback victory against the reigning Super Bowl title holders Philadelphia, prior to boarding a plane for Sunday's London contest.

The New England Patriots then visited Buffalo and halted the Bills' perfect record with an impressive victory of their own in their initial national television game in twelve months.

Baltimore's team experienced a third straight defeat - their defensive struggles could be terminal for their postseason aspirations - while Dallas, Indianapolis Colts, and Detroit Lions enjoyed decisive victories on yet another eventful Sunday.

Denver Downs Champions

It wasn't just beating the Super Bowl champions, but the manner of their 14-point comeback that made Denver's win by 21-17 in Philadelphia such a signature success.

The Eagles had won 10 games consecutively, 12 in a row on home turf and 20 of their last 21 overall before Broncos quarterback Bo Nix orchestrated two scoring drives in five fourth-quarter minutes and a last-minute three-pointer.

The Eagles are now 4-1 but there exists significant concern about their offensive unit, which sits among the poorest performing in the NFL. Wideout DaVonta Smith stated they are not "in sync" with QB Jalen Hurts.

Denver's defence, which tackled Hurts six times, had a lot to do with it, and, together with a genuine franchise quarterback in Nix and elite coach in Sean Payton, they have all the ingredients to mount a serious challenge.

Denver face the New York Jets at Tottenham Stadium on Sunday.

Primetime Patriots Upset Bills

Should the Broncos' victory was almost half expected, nobody saw the Patriots traveling to Buffalo and defeating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with tremendous resilience.

A first primetime game for Drake Maye produced a breakout performance as he led a decisive field goal drive in the dying seconds to win 23-20.

The young QB was tough and made the right throws at crucial moments, many to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who delivered an outstanding performance for Mike Vrabel's team.

Vrabel was anticipated to improve the situation in New England, but a win like this arrived earlier than most expected.

Patriots Defense

The Patriots defence contained the Buffalo Bills attack during their upset road victory.

Baltimore Postseason Hopes Over?

The season is turning into a nightmare for Baltimore, who were missing multiple key defenders as they were dominated 44-10 by the Houston Texans.

It equaled their biggest home defeat, and falling to 1-4 for the season means one of the preseason Super Bowl contenders have just a small opportunity of making the play-offs.

The Ravens are currently 4-11 playing without superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was hurt, but the real issue is an exceptionally poor defensive unit that is the real problem - for a franchise that have been synonymous with defensive toughness over the years.

The Texans strolled to victory as Baltimore became the first team in modern NFL history to concede at least 37 points in four of their first five games. Their season is effectively in tatters.

Detroit, Tampa and Indianapolis Go 4-1

The Lions' running back duo Gibbs and Montgomery registered a touchdown in the same game for the 14th time - a shared NFL mark - as the Lions defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24.

Victory made it four victories consecutively for the league's top scorers Detroit, but none against opponents with positive records.

A more unexpected 4-1 side are the Indianapolis Colts. With their star running back scoring three touchdowns in their 40-6 rout of Las Vegas and signal-caller Daniel Jones looking like a new man, they will be a tough match for any side.

Tampa Bay entered the 4-1 club with a mesmeric 38-35 victory in Seattle in which the sides traded nine scores in 10 impressive possessions before the Seahawks cracked first with a final-minute turnover.

Chase McLaughlin booted the winner with the final play of the game for the second time this year. Each of Tampa Bay's wins have been clinched in the final moments.

New Orleans and Tennessee Receive Assistance for Initial Victories

The way the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee started this campaign, they required assistance to get their first wins, and they got plenty thanks to some farcical errors from the New York Giants and Arizona.

After a good start from first-year player Jaxson Dart, the Giants committed five giveaways - one was decisively returned for a touchdown - while additionally permitting Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on an 87-yard catch and run as New Orleans won 26-14.

Arizona were even worse as they squandered a substantial advantage mainly due to two huge blunders.

First, Emari Demercado inexplicably dropped the football moments before crossing the line for a 72-yard touchdown.

Worse followed when the Cardinals intercepted Cam Ward near their end zone, then lost the ball across the goal line for Tyler Lockett to score as the Titans snapped a 10-game losing streak with a narrow victory.

Seahawks Receiver

The receiver registered among the most bizarre touchdowns witnessed this season.

This left New York's Jets as the only winless squad remaining in the NFL after their punishing 37-22 defeat by the Cowboys.

Jayden Daniels became the first player in NFL history to eclipse 4K through the air and 1,000 yards rushing in his initial twenty professional contests as he returned from injury to guide the Washington Commanders to a notable 27-10 victory at the Los Angeles Chargers.

The running back was the standout performer for Carolina with 206 rushing yards in their thrilling 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
