The acclaimed filmmaker's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, stands as a movie audiences have been anticipating ever since it was revealed. It easily ranks among the most hotly anticipated motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a trailer has finally arrived, even if it's compromised by YouTube's poor compression—maybe illustrating the director's choice to restrict the preview exclusive to cinemas.

The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast

This first look reveals Matt Damon portraying the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland playing the son and Anne Hathaway depicting the loyal wife. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks Odysseus to promise he will return, to which he look up and question what occurs should he fail. Furthermore, the preview provides a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, from whom sheep are are taken by the hero and his men on their treacherous voyage.

Based upon a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest undertaken by the famed ruler. Following his victory in the Trojan War, as told in Homer's Iliad, the king faces an extended and hazardous road home.

Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup

Along his path, the hero encounters countless challenges and mythical beings. This roster features the witch-goddess Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to get back to Penelope and Telemachus on his home island.

This film's ensemble is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.

A Story Repeatedly Told

Homer's epic has seen many reinterpretations throughout history. Examples include modern retellings and a late-90s dance production. It has even been a stage musical adaptation titled Epic: The Musical, presented as a nine-album collection.

A full-length preview was long awaited since the film's announcement and a short teaser clip which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That teaser subsequently found its way online soon after.
