Used Fishing Nets from French Coast Evolve into Vital Defense To Counter Enemy Drones in the War Zone

On the port areas of France's Brittany coast, piles of discarded fishing nets stand as a familiar view.

The operational period of marine harvesting nets generally extends between 12-24 months, after which they become deteriorated and irreparable.

Currently, this marine-grade mesh, once used to trawl deep-sea fish from the marine bottom, is serving alternative functions for an unexpected target: hostile aerial vehicles.

Humanitarian Effort Transforms Marine Waste

A French humanitarian organization has sent two consignments of nets measuring 280 kilometers to the war-torn nation to protect soldiers and civilians along the battle areas where conflict intensifies.

Russia employs inexpensive unmanned aircraft equipped with detonation devices, controlling them by distance operation for distances of up to 15.5 miles.

"Since the conflict began, the war has transformed. Initially we barely imagined about drones, but now it's a aerial combat conflict," commented a charity logistics coordinator.

Tactical Use of Trawling Gear

Military personnel use the nets to establish tunnels where drone propellers become entangled. This method has been likened to web-building predators trapping prey in a mesh.

"Military representatives explained they cannot use random fishing gear. They received numerous that are of no use," the coordinator explained.

"The nets we are sending are made of specialized material and used for ocean trawling to catch strong marine species which are remarkably forceful and impact the material with a power comparable to that of a drone."

Expanding Uses

At first deployed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the combat zone, the nets are now implemented on roads, overpasses, the healthcare center gateways.

"It's incredible that something so simple proves so effective," commented the charity president.

"There is no lack of fishing nets in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as several companies that recycle them have ceased operations."

Logistical Challenges

The charitable organization was established after local Ukrainians contacted the organizers requesting help regarding essential provisions and healthcare materials for communities back home.

A team of helpers have driven two truck shipments of humanitarian assistance 2,300km to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.

"When we learned that Ukraine sought protective gear, the marine industry responded immediately," declared the humanitarian coordinator.

Drone Warfare Evolution

The enemy utilizes real-time visual vehicles resembling those on the commercial market that can be guided by distance operation and are then armed with explosives.

Hostile controllers with live camera streams steer them to their destinations. In various locations, Ukrainian forces report that all activity ceases without attracting the attention of swarms of "destructive" self-destruct vehicles.

Defensive Strategies

The trawling material are stretched between poles to create netting tunnels or used to protect trenches and equipment.

Defense unmanned aircraft are also fitted with fragments of material to drop on opposition vehicles.

In recent periods, Ukraine was dealing with more than five hundred unmanned aircraft per day.

Global Assistance

Hundreds of tonnes of old nets have also been contributed by fishers in Scandinavian nations.

An ex-marine industry representative commented that local fishers are extremely pleased to support the defense cause.

"They are proud to know their discarded equipment is going to contribute to safety," he informed media.

Funding Limitations

The organization no longer has the funds to dispatch additional materials this year and negotiations are occurring for Ukraine to provide transport to collect the material.

"We plan to support get the nets and prepare them but we lack the monetary resources to continue managing shipments ourselves," explained the humanitarian coordinator.

Practical Restrictions

A defense forces representative reported that anti-drone net tunnels were being implemented across the eastern territory, about the majority of which is now reported to be occupied and controlled by opposition military.

She added that opposition vehicle controllers were increasingly finding ways to circumvent the protection.

"Protective material cannot serve as a universal remedy. They are just a particular aspect of protection against drones," she clarified.

A retired market garden trader described that the Ukrainians he had met were affected by the support of Brittany's coastal communities.

"The reality that those in the marine sector the other side of Europe are sending nets to support their defensive measures has created moving moments to their eyes," he remarked.
