This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
