Alright, how was the past year in your home? Did it seem all as good as one might claim on online? Packed with academic success for the children and wild costume celebrations for the parents? Or perhaps it was a ocean of letdowns with only occasional fun highlights? And was any of it actually real, or is everyone now digitally altered AI slop beings with unrealistic teeth?
I have gathered everyone for a chat, ready or not, to reflect on the most important thing in twelve months: which releases we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Pikmin
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my games column."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I suggested it. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to build character so he can grow up and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building digital pastime, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could eviscerate my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it needed earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I could play at any hour. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard Metroidvania-esque thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I get that it has great art and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Debate between business deals that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
