For Bellingham to hopes to fight his way into England’s strongest squad, the smart move to cut out the unnecessary reactions. His reaction when he saw that his number was about to come up after a match of uneven play in the match against Albania fell short of expectations.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I hold to my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the teammates who come in," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it as a player."
The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Kane had just put England 2-0 up in a dead rubber match, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, following an inconsistent display, had just been booked for a foul on an opponent. This was hardly a controversial substitution. Indeed it would have been unwise for the head coach to keep Bellingham on the pitch considering it was possible the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the first match of the World Cup by picking up a second caution.
But Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. It was impossible to miss the player's frustration upon understanding that he was going to make way for a teammate. He threw his arms up and while he accepted the coach's hand on his way to the touchline it was clear that the manager did not appreciate it.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He congratulated his teammate for providing the assist for Harry Kane to score his second of the night, but everything else was counterproductive. It's not like protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The German has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of behaving correctly.
He, omitted from the team last month, has faced close inspection upon his return to the fold this month. Practically he has been on trial and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to his substitution as the national team completed a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a feisty challenge from Albania.
As a result the jury is out on whether the team perform optimally including Bellingham. The evidence here was inconclusive. Some new ideas were tested from Tuchel early on. Under him, England have gained the team structure and clarity lately, employing a holding player, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different versus Albania. The young defender was made his England debut, the midfielder was in the starting lineup for England and the role of the defender as a makeshift midfielder created a similar look to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze in the latter period but frequently appeared trying too hard. He made many poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation against an opponent at the beginning. The team looked disjointed after halftime. An opportunity for Albania resulted from Bellingham squandered possession. The yellow card was shown after he lost the ball to Broja and brought down Broja.
Finally England’s depth made the difference. Tuchel introduced Foden, who seemed more naturally fitted to the position that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and Bukayo Saka. Eventually Saka whipped in a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. It was a reminder that set pieces will be crucial in the upcoming tournament.
However, all talk was about Bellingham. The quality of Rashford's cross for the second goal was partly forgotten amid the drama of the player change. At the end, everyone was watching him. Tuchel walked up to his side and directed Bellingham to acknowledge the away supporters. Their connection remains intact. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon the player just yet. But if he is willing to offer him the central position is not guaranteed.
