"Moving near the area, the heat rises and you can sense it, with the fumes being particularly thick."
University student a local student was among the numerous residents attracted to the scene of a tragic inferno that engulfed much of the multi-block housing complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po area.
At least over three dozen residents have perished in yesterday's destructive blaze so far, with many still unaccounted for, suggesting that this figure will likely grow.
"This is a catastrophe," the witness remarked about the incident, mentioning that he had observed a body being removed from the scene.
In excess of a thousand additional residents were compelled to leave the estate as the blaze advanced, with several going to emergency shelters that have been organized to house them.
The blaze is progressively being managed, but officials report they cannot determine when it will be fully eliminated.
Flames could be observed issuing from separate apartments as countless onlookers looked on in stillness.
"I'm overwhelmed. The building contains so many friends and friends. I cannot comprehend what is happening any longer. Look, all the apartments are just ablaze. I cannot determine what to achieve. I pray the authorities can assist us to rebuild after this."
One local woman mentioned that her acquaintances reside inside the building and she was waiting to hear if they were able to evacuate.
A long-term resident, who has dwelled in the second building of the housing complex for over 40 annums, recalled perceiving "an extremely loud sound" and observing fire erupt in a nearby structure.
"I quickly went back to pack up my belongings," the 66-year-old inhabitant stated.
"I am uncertain how I feel at this moment. I'm just pondering about where I'm going to rest tonight because I almost certainly won't be able to go re-enter my residence."
While the cause of the inferno that overwhelmed the several multi-story blocks remains unknown, the fire are believed to have spread quickly through the bamboo scaffolding that enveloped the complexes, which were in the process of renovations.
Some residents have demonstrated anger that such a massive incident could have taken place and challenged the response.
"When there's a brush fire, they will deploy aircraft and drop water bombs, but why is there no such deployment and how can they allow further structures on fire?" inquired a different resident of Wang Fuk Court.
"Our neighborhood is so proximate to the fire station and we assumed the fire could be controlled quickly, but now the flames has expanded. I'm so disappointed," she added.
The woman noted that she had been offered no instructions from the local administration on where to find assistance.
Several Tai Po community members had brought supplies to the affected individuals - consisting of numerous of blankets and heat packs.
When asked about their feelings regarding the tragedy, inhabitants stated that "authorities is ineffective" and that they were "immensely devastated".
"We don't want to witness any more fatalities," said an individual.
An older woman who resides in an apartment in the impacted buildings explained she was not at home when the fire broke out but that she is concerned about her residence because it is uninsured.
"I'm profoundly distressed that I have no residence to return to at present," she concluded.
