The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
