Bruce Straley responsible for the iconic survival game is making his return to video games. This inventive adventure, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the inaugural effort for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, a project that draws heavily from his previous work centered around characters that learn and adapt.
Shown for the first time at a major gaming event, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a narrative-driven exploration title. You guide a seasoned spellcaster, a character who defies traditional video game heroics. This central concept came from a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist.
"What if you lacked traditional weapons? What if your character was somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the creative lead. "This felt really fascinating to question what makes a hero. Being a hero means persevering against obstacles, including traits like sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
While the game seems unfamiliar visually, its most significant advancement is a direct continuation the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project was inspired by a central inquiry: "What if I could make a companion character truly living and learning based on player actions?"
The companion creature within this adventure isn’t an average NPC. It is essentially a curious child which observes and responds in three key stages. To begin with, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in playful hijinks. Then, it tries to copy what it sees. Ultimately, it observes and assimilates to learn how things work.
Such advanced AI is designed to create a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that the game will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience rather than a traditionally structured narrative.
"Anytime I tried more hardcore story beats for this project, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The core appeal between these characters stems from how each individual player will inevitably create personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."
By prioritizing organic narrative born from interaction, the new title marks both an evolution and a significant shift from the director’s well-known franchises. This adventure is currently targeting computer systems.
