A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was located not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.
Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
