Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in armed forces or defense roles.
"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats published a combined statement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our country with great patriotism and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these radical social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and made an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and censure the president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official stated. "There are active officials of the federal government who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the president's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
