Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.

Play-Off Decider

That led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
